OB 225 being loaded with a mooring
There was a lot of fishing gear that regularly had to be taken from the shore to be put in the sea.
At the start of the season the, up to six, moorings had to be assembled on the shore, taken down the beach and then loaded onto the coble. This, as illustrated in the photo above took place with the boat stern on to the beach and held in place by the “swell ropes” (You can see a swell rope over the forward starboard pin in the photo.
When loading the mooring the kit went into the boat with the anchor end first; first the anchor end of the anchor chain then the mooring, the bridle and finally the setting line.
To lay the mooring the coble had to go alongside the rocks at the net position, tie the shore end of the setting line to the “land end” rope and then the boat would slowly motor out “shooting” first the setting line, then the bridle, the mooring, the chain and finally the anchor
Each Monday six clean leaders had to be loaded onto the coble to get the nets fishing again after the weekend close. Usually the boat was brought alongside the beach for this
Similarly the boat was laid alongside the beach when a clean “head” was loaded. The six heads were changed once a week. There is a photo of the coble by the beach here
